5 celebrities who love water conservation

Some might not see water conservation as the most glamorous thing in the world, but our clients in Tinseltown tend to disagree. And while most of them aren’t really down to let us shamelessly name-drop them in hopes of gaining some clout for greywater (understandable), here are 5 that gave us the green light:

1. Bill Nye

A certain generation’s favorite science guy has seen the evidence and he’s a huge proponent of rainwater reuse, so much so that he had us install tanks on every last corner of his lot to store as much rainwater as possible.

Bill was very involved in planning and design his system, which lead to some fun moments working (and clowning) with our foreman Joe Madden.

The system, which irrigates his vegetable garden, stores 2,175 gallons in 7 Bushman Slimline tanks plus a barrel, and treats rain water to spray irrigation standards using a UV filter.

2. Bill Pullman

Arguably the greatest President we ever had, Mr. Pullman keeps an exotic fruit tree orchard on his property in the Hollywood Hills. The problem is his lot is very steep and the trees are difficult to access, let alone water frequently.

The solution was a pumped system that moves gray water from showers and bathtubs out to the orchard. Now he doesn’t have to worry about the trees getting enough water, and we have this nice picture of the crew with our favorite cinematic POTUS.

3. Alicia Silverstone

The longstanding environmentalist, vegan advocate and “Clueless” superstar has been repping the Tree People since her turn as Cher in the iconic 90’s comedic masterpiece. She was one of our first clients and a joy to work with.

She has a couple of articles on her blog about her greywater system and how it impacted her and her son’s lives, including the joy they get from eating fruit irrigated with re-used graywater.

Definitely worth a read for a peek into their everyday life, and for some tips on how to incorporate greywater into yours.

4. Ed Begley Jr.

A man of many roles, environmentalist might just be his main one. An activist since 1970, Mr. Begley has been a champion of green tech such as solar power and greywater from the start, including “a go kart powered by (his) own sense of self-satisfaction” (as featured on The Simpsons).

We installed a branched drain greywater system at his home, which also featured native plantings and a large vegetable garden/orchard. Mr. Begley is known for having a great sense of humor, but he’s also one of the most knowledgeable clients we’ve had the pleasure of working with.

5. Warren Olney

Warren Olney is a Los Angeles news legend. They were using film cameras when he started reporting the news on the streets of LA.

He told us this in the cool shade of his Venice Beach bungalow patio, which is green and blooming year round thanks to the greywater from his laundry to landscape grey water system.

As his continued popularity on KCRW’s “To the Point” shows, the man has kept up with the times just fine. And as the video below demonstrates, he really does get right down to it:
